40 police quizzed over 'bug'
AN internal investigation into the use of a monitoring device in an Anti-Corruption Branch interview room has so far resulted in more than 40 police officers being quizzed.

It is understood the interviewing process is in its final stages, with an assessment of all statements taken to be made next week.
The Sunday Mail last week revealed the internal investigation had been launched by Police Commissioner Mal Hyde after he was alerted to concerns about a monitoring device in the ACB. The inquiry is being overseen by the Police Complaints Authority.

It is focusing on t... Read more

Senior police officer stood do

A senior cop who consulted with the public over changes to police conduct rules was himself last night under criminal investigation.

Sunday News can reveal the long-serving Auckland sergeant is alleged to have used a police vehicle and then reported it stolen.

The top-level probe was launched when the car that was reported stolen was found parked in an inner-city Auckland street.

Staff around Auckland were sent an internal memo and asked to keep a watch out for the car.

The officer who reported it stolen, Balmoral police station head Sergeant John Walker, has been stood down on full pay.

An out-of-town officer was drafted in last Monday to replace him.

A police source said it was alleged the car was taken without authorisation and was later reported stolen.

"The vehicle was found and questions were then asked about how a police vehicle could be taken from the police station."

Walker told Sunday News on Friday that he was being investigated but would not discuss the matter.

"I will let the investigation take its course," Walker, a police officer for 22 years, told Sunday News.

Auckland police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said the matter was the subject of a criminal investigation.

She said on January 16 "a police officer reported a police vehicle was stolen from Mt Roskill Police Station.

"It was recovered in Mt Eden on a public street the following day," Hegarty said.

"An officer was stood down from duties (the following day) and a criminal investigation is being carried out into his activities relating to the car.

"The officer who reported the car stolen is the officer who's been stood down.

"The car was not found at or near his address."

Walker was responsible for consulting with members of the Mt Roskill community over changes to the Police Act last year. He spoke about the draft document Police Directions in NZ for the 21st Century.

According to council minutes, the sergeant spoke at Mt Roskill's Community Board meeting in July about "upholding standards of conduct and integrity" and "integrity testing to further support ethical behaviour".
