Tainted Mozambique cops to be

More than 100 Mozambican police officers will soon be disciplined for their part in criminal activities, especially extortion, state media reported on Thursday.

Pedro Cossa, spokesperson of the national police service (PRM) was quoted by Radio Mozambique as saying the process would be carried out in a few days.

The report comes at a time when the police service has been tainted with accusations of corruption and incompetence.

Human rights groups rate Mozambique's police service especially the traffic department as the second most corrupt after the customs service.

Last week three police officers were detained after they tried to extort money from an informal trader in one of Maputo's informal markets, the station said.

In the last two year a total of 26 police officers were dismissed after they were found guilty of acts of misconduct.
