Staff shortages hit street pat

POLICE foot patrols and a visual presence on Moonee Valley streets haven fallen victim to staff shortages, according to a local officer.

About 40 Moonee Valley police members attended a rally in Melbourne last Tuesday calling on Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon to resign.

Moonee Valley Sen-Sgt Erik Krauklis , police union delegate for Moonee Valley and Moreland, said resourcing had been an issue across the state since the 1990s.

"The real problem is Victoria Police doesn't have sufficient staff in the front line to staff 24-hour police stations," he said.

"Across the state and in Moonee Valley, jobs such as tactical intelligence officers, crime desk and various community liaison positions were filled by front line staff, thereby reducing staff available for response duties in the division van and cars."

Sen-Sgt Krauklis said he did not want to alarm the community or sensationalise the problem but said management needed to admit there was one.

"The local members are looking for more police available at stations for response and pro-active policing."

Sen-Sgt Krauklis said the rally was the culmination of mounting staff problems as well as changes to police regulations and the extension of the Office of Police Integrity's powers.

"Chief Commissioner Nixon is doing a good job in some areas but she appears to have failed to convince the government to increase the police budget and employment numbers."

District Inspector Nigel Howard said there were 12 vacancies in Moonee Valley.

"At present from the time a position is vacated to the time it is filled there is a minimum lag time of 12 weeks," he said.

"That's right across Victoria . We have vacancies and secondments no different to another organisation or business. The community of Moonee Valley can be assured they have the best available service."

Insp Howard said he would not be drawn into a "tit for tat" debate on staffing with the police union.
