Risky to share list of accused
Releasing the names of Chicago Police officers most often accused of excessive force would endanger officers and their families, make them potential targets for "baseless lawsuits" and unfairly taint those falsely accused, interim Police Supt. Dana Starks said Monday.

At a City Council budget hearing, Starks said he understands why aldermen are demanding the list. But he's also concerned about the "irreversible ramifications" that releasing the names would trigger.

"Above all, I am concerned about the safety of officers, as well as the safety of their families. ... These... Read more

Brooklyn Teen Sues City For Al

At a news conference Monday, the lawyer of Jonathan Zeigler, 18, said that the teenager’s family is suing the city for $20 million dollars for assault and battery and violation of his civil rights.

The left leg of Jonathan Zeigler, 18, contains 11 screws on one side and a metal plate on the other. Zeigler claims his injuries were caused by two police officers who ran over him with their patrol car last May in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

"My bone came out my skin. I was in the hospital for two weeks. And they didn't let me see my mother," said Zeigler.

The incident happened on Maple Street, and according to Zeigler’s lawyer, the teenager took an abandoned car for a ride at nighttime and parked it. When he walked away, a patrol car jumped the curb and mowed him down. Two officers from the 71st precinct arrested him and charged him with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, among other charges, which were later dismissed.

But police claimed that Zeigler was driving a stolen car, that he jumped out while it was still moving and therefore ran over his leg.

Zeigler underwent two surgeries at Kings County Hospital.

"I didn't know if he was alive or whatever. I didn't get no chance to see him for 10 days. I just wanted to look at him and speak to him to make sure he was alright. I got nothing," said Zeigler’s mother, Denise.

"They left me handcuffed to the bed for the whole time. I didn't make no phone calls. I didn't receive no phone calls," said Jonathan Zeigler.

After he was released from the hospital, Zeigler was brought to the 71st precinct, where family members say they were still restricted from having any contact with him, including his sister who works for the Correction Department.

"I should have been given a courtesy by police because I'm in law enforcement just like them,” said Jonathan Zeigler’s sister Tandra, “but I wasn't even given a courtesy to see my brother. And I think it's really unfair because of all of the pain he was going through."

"We are demanding punitive damages against the City of New York and the NYC Police Department as well as the individual officers involved in this,” said Zeigler's lawyer, Bonita Zelman.

No matter how he received the injuries, Jonathan Zeigler will return for a third round of surgeries.
