Botswana: Police Corruption Wo

The Minister of Justice, Defence and Security Dikgakgamatso Seretse is worried by escalating corruption and bribery in the Botswana Police Service (BPS).

Addressing the police at a hall at the Special Support Group headquerters in Gaborone on Saturday, Seretse emphasised the need to protect the integrity of "this noble" institution.

The minister said if corruption within the ranks of the police, members of the public would lose confidence in them. He warned those with an inclination towards corruption and bribe-taking to desist or they would be expelled.

Seretse urged the officers not to live beyond their means in order to avoid temptation. He said he was concerned by the moral decay within the ranks of the police and that he still couldn't come to terms with the fact that some police officers took the government to court over the suspension of scarce skill allowances.

Even though they were within their constitutional rights to do so, Seretse said he was perturbed that the officers deviated from established police procedure.

He said the suspension of the allowances was made to iron out some issues: "There were certain irregularities when the scarce skills allowance was introduced," Seretse said. "The beneficiaries had to forfeit their professional allowances to qualify for scarce skills allowances. We (therefore) wanted to rectify the situation (because) we realised we were denying some people their long-term benefits for short-term benefits."
