Two Amherst cops facing miscon

A criminal investigation of two Amherst police officers is underway for alleged misconduct following the conviction of a 51-year-old local man last year.

Mark Mander, chief of police in Kentville confirms that he was asked by Amherst police Chief Charles Rushton to conduct the investigation.

"The matter started as a Police Act complaint. I was asked in June to look into the matter for the Amherst police," Mander said.

"The investigation is currently ongoing."

Mander did not want to get into specifics of the investigation, but they stem from a complaint filed by Patrick Thomas Hawco against the two officers.

Hawco, an inmate at Dorchester Penitentiary in New Brunswick, was charged with multiple counts of theft, fraud, break and enter, mischief and breaching a recognizance.

Hawco was sentenced to just over 52 months custody after a provincial court trial last November.

He also filed Police Act complaints against the two officers and another officer, as well as the police department’s leadership.

Rushton confirmed an investigation is underway, but declined further comment.

Mander said he asked the Nova Scotia Police Commission to suspend the Police Act investigation while he conducted his probe of the two officers.
