Stoughton officials fire convi

STOUGHTON — Town officials in Stoughton have dismissed Police Chief Manuel Cachopa after his conviction last month on charges of being an accessory after the fact in a case of attempted extortion.

Cachopa had been found guilty in Norfolk Superior Court last month and faces a possible prison sentence of up to seven years. Cachopa has been on paid leave since he was indicted nearly four years ago.

The Enterprise of Brockton reported the Stoughton Board of Selectmen voted 4-0 to fire Cachopa.

The jury found the 25-year-veteran of the force not guilty of public corruption, which involved allegations that Cachopa attempted to coerce a witness to drop a complaint of misconduct against former Stoughton police Sgt. David M. Cohen.
