Philly Police Beating Now Bein
Last week the nation the was privy to video footage of 15 Philadelphia police officers viciously beating three black men. New reports asked viewers not to jump to conclusions and suggested that the three men were suspected in a shooting death. Now reports are surfacing that shooting suspects story might be a coverup for a violent case of mistaken identity.

Second charge brought against

The Columbia police officer accused of using excessive force against South Carolina offensive lineman Kevin Young faces a second charge in connection with last year’s incident.

A Richland County grand jury this month indicted David Beddingfield on a simple assault charge, a court spokesperson said Tuesday. Beddingfield pleaded not guilty in August to the original charge of misconduct in office.

First Circuit solicitor David Pascoe, who is prosecuting the case because of a conflict with the Fifth Circuit solicitor’s office, dismissed a misconduct charge against a second Columbia officer, Roger Gilland, last month.

Beddingfield has been suspended without pay since being indicted in August. He faces a year in prison and $1,000 fine if convicted of misconduct in office.

Mark Whitlark, Beddingfield’s attorney, dismissed the idea that Beddingfield would plead guilty to simple assault, the lesser of the two charges.

“He’s not going to plead to anything because he didn’t do what they’re saying,” Whitlark said. “He did his job that night, within the standards and applications of police work. He was well within the parameters of his duties.”

Beddingfield and Gilland were responding to an early-morning fight that started in a Five Points bar before spilling on to Harden Street on March 2 between Young and a West Columbia man.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Young claims he was punched repeatedly in the face and sustained a bloody nose while being subdued. Police dropped fighting and resisting arrest charges against Young.
