Detective to admit fraud guilt
THE suspended fraud squad detective Con Kostakidis will plead guilty to fraud over an investment property in Castle Hill, a court was told yesterday.

Kostakidis, 45, of Padstow, has been accused of writing a letter falsely claiming to employ a colleague's wife at the Oxford Street cafe he was running so that the couple could get a home loan.

A document tendered in Downing Centre Local Court showed the Police Integrity Commission recorded telephone conversations with his fraud squad colleague Rafiq Ahmed from late 2005.

During that time Ahmed, 37, told Kostakidi... Read more

Ex-police sergeant faces charg

A recently fired Sturgis police sergeant was charged Thursday with dissemination of confidential information, a misdemeanor, St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough announced.

Luis Rosado was fired June 12, Sturgis police said earlier this week.

In a statement released Thursday, McDonough said the charge is related to the release of confidential reports and records protected under the Child Protection Law.

Rosado allegedly asked for confidential information about a Department of Human Services case strictly for personal reasons, McDonough said later Thursday. The prosecutor would not say who Rosado allegedly approached for the information, nor would he discuss the relationship between Rosado and the child involved.

The charge stems from an incident that occurred March 3, McDonough said. A civilian complaint over the matter was filed in May, Sturgis police have said.

The 46-year-old Rosado, an 18-year veteran of the department, could not be reached for comment.

``I am saddened to make this announcement. Sgt. Rosado served our county loyally for a number of years,'' McDonough said in his statement.

``His recent actions in other cases as well as this one have resulted in his credibility being called into question by myself, the members of my office and the judges of this county.

``When a police officer loses the trust of the people who must trust him in order to do their jobs correctly, it is time for that officer to go,'' the prosecutor said.

McDonough said he would not authorize any cases that Rosado submitted for prosecution and that he is reviewing all open cases with which Rosado was involved.

``I was not going to have the integrity of my office, the courts of this county, or the police officers of this county be questioned because of the reckless and illegal actions of a single officer,'' McDonough said in his statement.

The prosecutor said a summons likely will be issued to Rosado within the next two weeks to appear in St. Joseph County District Court. A visiting judge and visiting prosecuting attorney are likely to be assigned to the case, McDonough said.
