The director of finances at Devon and Cornwall Police has been suspended and is facing allegations of gross misconduct for his role in the 2005 staff pay row.

A veteran Jersey City police officer was arrested today and charged with theft by deception and official misconduct following an internal investigation, police officials said.

Officials said Eugene Falconetti, 47, a 21-year-veteran of the department, was arrested while in uniform at about noon by members of the department's Internal Affairs Unit, but wouldn't disclose the specific allegations.

Sources said last night that Falconetti is charged with taking cash in exchange for failing to perform an official function.

"Upon receiving information about something that appeared to be improper, we took immediate action that led to his arrest today," Police Chief Tom Comey said, noting the officer has been suspended without pay.

"The public can be confident that the actions of this one person does not reflect on the integrity of the entire department," Comey added. "More so, this shows we act quickly and accordingly when an allegation of wrongdoing by one of our officers is made."

Comey said the investigation into Falconetti's alleged offense is ongoing and further details would be "released at the appropriate time."

Falconetti was named "East District Officer of the Month" in April 2008, according to a department newsletter. He also won an Excellent Police Service Award last year.

Falconetti's bail was set at $50,000 cash or bond by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan. It could not be determined if he posted bail
