Police limit new powers for PC
Plans to give police community support officers (PCSOs) extra powers have been scaled back after senior officers voiced concerns.

As part of its efforts to reduce street crime, the Home Office had suggested handing PCSOs an additional 39 powers, including the right to search suspects for weapons, seize drugs and confiscate alcohol and tobacco.

In August last year, Charles Clarke, then home secretary, asked police forces in England and Wales, police authorities and unions for their responses to the proposals. Embarrassingly for Mr Clarke's successor, John Reid, many of tho... Read more

KPK urged to continue investig

The Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) urged the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to continue investigating the alleged bribery within the police after a top-ranked police officer was believed to have been caught asking for a US$18 million bribe.

The KPK are said to have wiretapped a conversation in which National Police Detective Chief Comr. Gen. Susno Dudaji asked for the bribe in a case involving Bank Century-Antaboga, which cost bank customers Rp 1.4 trillion ($140 million).

ICW Deputy Coordinator Emerson Yuntho told The Jakarta Post that the KPK must continue probing the police bribery allegation and should not be affected by the arrest of the commission's suspended chief Antasari Azhar, who had been charged with premeditated murder.

"If the evidence during wiretapping is sufficient to name somebody a suspect, then the KPK has no reason to postpone the investigation."

A source who said on condition of anonymity told the Post that in August last year, the KPK received information about the alleged bribery involving the police and other government officials in connection with the Bank Centrury-Antaboga scandal.

Emerson said that the anti-graft body had never touched graft cases within the police and the judiciary institution.

"As we know that the police and judiciary bodies are also very corrupt. This is a great momentum for the KPK to clean up those two institutions."

Another ICW activist, Febri Diansyah, said he suspected the police had a hidden agenda in degrading the anti-graft body following Antasari's arrest.

"The police were said to be seeking another top KPK official. I suspect their motives are to continue the effort to weaken the anti-graft body.

"The National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri must see the case comprehensively as his staffs were said to be involved in bribery in connection with the Bank Century.

"If a top-ranked police officer is suspected of committing graft, Bambang should take action and not protect him."

Meanwhile, KPK spokesman Johan Budi SP told reporters that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would hold a meeting with top officials of the KPK, National Police, and Attorney General Office (AGO).

"The meeting is scheduled on Monday. Its agenda will be about the coordination among the three institutions in eradicating corruption," Johan said.

Rumors circulated that the meeting aimed to settle down the "heated" connection between the police and the KPK.

Febri said the President should take real action to protect the KPK and push the commission not to be afraid in investigating alleged grafts within the police and other institutions.

Susno said last week, as quoted by Tempo magazine, that "a lizard" should not attack "a crocodile".

"A lizard attacks a crocodile? The crocodile won't be angry but only be disappointed in that, apparently, the lizard is still stupid."

Rumors circulated that by lizard Susno meant the KPK and by the crocodile he meant the police. But Susno denied the claims.

"I just said lizard and crocodile. I didn't say that the animals referred to any institutions."
