Mountie busted for domestic as

A Mountie with the RCMP K-Division's major crimes unit has been charged in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident after an investigation by a police watchdog.

Cpl. Kelly Gulaga, 40, was charged with five counts of assault, one count of forcible confinement and one firearms offence after the alleged incident in March 2007.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, a provincially funded unit that investigates incidents involving Alberta police in matters involving serious injury, death or allegations of police misconduct, started its investigation in July.

Clifton Purvis, executive director of ASIRT, said he could not comment on the case as "the matter is still before the courts."

Gulaga appeared in St. Albert provincial court on Monday. He is expected to be back in court Oct. 5.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Wayne Oakes said Gulaga, a 19-year RCMP veteran, has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the case.
