Fort Myers police trainee quit

A Fort Myers police officer trainee has resigned after an internal investigation revealed he stopped a vehicle on Interstate 75 in Sarasota and followed on-duty officers around Fort Myers while off duty and in his personal vehicle.

Officer Stanley Cajuste resigned Sept. 18 after it was recommended he be fired for a breach of department policy for not notifying his immediate chain of command after being involved in an off-duty incident.
According to the report:
Cajuste was off-duty and driving his own car on I-75 in Sarasota County on Aug. 13 when he conducted a traffic stop. He told investigators the driver was speeding, tailgating and driving recklessly.
Cajuste said he first saw the vehicle in Fort Myers and was only able to catch up to it 75 miles later.
The driver, Dennis Hernandez, told investigators Cajuste said he stopped him for speeding but said Cajuste acted casually and paid more attention to the women in the car.
Cajuste, wearing his blue Fort Myers Police Department polo shirt and carrying a weapon, briefly flashed his badge.
Steve Drum, an off-duty detective with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, was traveling north on I-75, saw the traffic stop and said it looked suspicious.
Drum told investigators he believed the man conducting the stop might be impersonating an officer, so he contacted the Florida Highway Patrol and another agency to check if either were conducting stops.
Drum later located Hernandez's vehicle in Tampa, talked with him about the unusual stop and reported it to law enforcement.
Later that evening, Cajuste was observed following officers in Fort Myers while they were on-duty and working in the Violent Crimes Task Force.
