How Does Stress Affect Police

CBS 11 News) DALLAS The arrest of a Dallas police officer Wednesday night puts the department in a tough spot, image-wise.

It's the third time an officer has been arrested in less than a week, and some are wondering if stress plays a role.

The allegations might be considered relatively minor if police weren't involved: they're class B misdemeanors.

But these are not rookie miscues; all are veteran officers with 10-to-25 years of service.

Dallas Police Association president Glenn White says police have the same problems as everyone else, but the stressors are often magnified He said, We live stress every single day of our lives, every time we knock on a door at a disturbance call; and then when we go home we're faced with stress--the finances, the family, everything that everyone else is faced with.”

It's a concern whenever officers are themselves the accused.

In this case, Rachael Nicely is charged with suspicion of DWI in Dallas. Lynette Harrison is accused of similar charge in Rockwall. And Steven Reideler is charged with indecent exposure in Coppell. They are, of course, innocent until proven guilty.

Dallas Police Department spokesman Gil Cerda said, “We provide psychological services for not only the officers themsleves but for family members.”

Police won't talk about these specific cases, but they do have several programs available for anyone feeling overwhelmed.

There is a substance abuse program for alcohol or painkillers; a critical incident stress program, for officers involved in things like shootings or wrecks; and a 24-hour peer-to-peer program if someone just needs to talk. Intervention is the idea.

Cerda said, “You don't want it to escalate to where it starts adversely effecting your performance or their integrity; both of these are very important.”

The programs are confidential. White's group goes a step further: “A lot of officers have a little bit of concern when they go to the department and seek help for psychological needs, so we've set up a psychological counseling program where officers just do it. It's done by a number, not by a name or their badge number.”
