Two senior Hollywood patrol officers abruptly resigned from the force Friday, just two weeks after four officers were snared in a federal corruption probe.

Richard Friedman, 49, and Angel DeLaRosa, 48, both 27-year veterans, turned in their retirement papers Friday.

The two patrol officers, like others in the agency, are ''disgusted and disheartened,'' by recent revelations of corruption, said police spokesman Capt. Tony Rode.

Neither officer could be reached for comment late Friday.

Citizen panel to examine the S

The Sarasota city commission approved a citizen panel Monday night to examine and advise the Sarasota Police Department. The blue ribbon citizen's panel is made up of eleven community leaders with diverse ethnic, social, and educational backgrounds.

Their job will be to investigate the policies, actions, management, and ethics of the Sarasota Police Department and advise the department on how to improve its relationship with the community. "This is a change that is long overdue for us as minorities to be able to start having that trust in our police department," said Barbara Langston, appointee to the citizens panel.

On June 26, patrol officer Christopher Childers was seen in a surveillance video kicking an arrested man, Juan Perez, in the face outside of jail. Perez, who is from Ecuador, does not speak English. Officer Childers' supervisor was slow in reporting the incident and the police department is accused of trying to pay off Perez.

"The panel's purpose is to form a community response to the incident that happened to Mr. Perez and the Chief of Police. It will set a behavioral standard as to what we, as leaders in the community, want our police force to be," said Susan Chapman, appointee to the panel.

The commission also decided to not seek a consulting firm outside of the Suncoast. Instead, a technical advisory team of four community members will be formed to guide the citizen panel.

It is still to be determined when the panel will meet. An investigation into the Perez case is currently being done by Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department.
