ONE hundred and sixty-eight serving members of Victoria Police have criminal convictions, it was revealed last night.

They have been convicted of offences including serious assaults, trafficking and possession of drugs, theft, perverting the course of justice and misconduct in public office.

Another 42 serving police have been cautioned or entered a diversion program over less serious offences.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the figures did not include police found guilty of serious traffic offences.

Police officer faces disciplinary hearing for opinion

A senior police officer may face a disciplinary hearing for his opinion article which appeared in Koran Tempo daily on Sept. 29.

A National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Marwoto Soeto said Sr. Comr. Daud Sihombing, a coordinator civil servant investigators supervision had been reprimanded for violating the police’s code of ethics.

“Indeed opining is not prohibited, but the code of ethics must be heeded,” Marwoto told tempointeraktif.com, adding that the National Police leaders would soon decide whether to bring Daud to the disciplinary council.

In his article Daud said the selection of National Police chief candidates should be entrusted to the National Police chief to avoid intervention.

Marwoto said individual officer who would express his or her opinion in public had to seek consent from their direct superior. Officers cannot publish their articles without approval from their leaders.

Last month the Air Force took actions against Col. Adjie Suradji for criticizing the leadership style of the president in his opinion article published by Kompas daily.
