Canada: Ottawa officer charged with sex assault over strip search

A police officer has been charged with sexual assault over a woman’s much-publicized arrest and strip search.

The officer, a Sergeant, was charged following an investigation by the province’s Special Investigations Unit. He is to appear in provincial court April 12.

The unit devoted to probing alleged police misconduct was called in after a video showed a special constable kneeing Stacy Bonds while she was being booked at police headquarters on Sept. 6, 2008.

The video also showed male officers holding Bonds down while another officer cut off her clothes the night she was arrested for a liquor offence.

Bonds was subsequently charged with assaulting a police officer, but a judge stayed proceedings in the case after seeing the video.

Other elements of the Bonds video, along with several other videos showing different cases of apparent police brutality, are still under investigation by various agencies.
