Two items of police news were published last week; the first relating to the conviction and sentencing of a Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) officer who was caught on camera accepting a bribe, and the second relating to a decline in serious crime in the country.

Ex-Texas police chief getting probation for theft

A former East Texas police chief who had money trouble is expected to serve three years of probation for stealing from the city.

Angelina County District Attorney Clyde Herrington says ex-Diboll police Chief Kent Havard pleaded guilty to theft by a public service.

Havard resigned March 2, after 30 years with the Diboll police force, after being advised of the Texas Rangers investigation. His plea agreement Tuesday also requires Havard to pay a $500 fine, make restitution of $5,100 and surrender his peace officer's license.

Herrington says Havard had personal financial trouble and the case involved the police scholarship fund, city credit card charges and stolen checks.

Retired Texas Ranger Donald Morris is interim police chief in Diboll, a town of about 5,500 located 100 miles northeast of Houston.
