NYC police teachers discipline

NEW YORK, NY, United States (UPI) -- Two New York City police officers have lost vacation days for accepting gifts from former students at the police academy.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly docked Sgt. Rosalind Newkirk for accepting a digital camera valued at $246.94 and Officer Jerry Diaz for accepting a New York Yankees jersey that cost $200 from students who graduated in July 2004, the New York Daily news reported Saturday.

Newkirk and Diaz have been transferred from the academy to less prestigious patrol assignments.

The students scored the best grades on three of the four exams given, and wanted to show their appreciation to Newkirk and Diaz, department records showed.

New York Police Department officers are prohibited from accepting 'tokens of appreciation' of cash or personal gifts although plaques or pen-and-pencil sets are allowed. Because of their value, the camera and jersey were prohibited, a police trial commissioner ruled.
