SUFFOLK police has come under fire for the second time in a week over its custody standards.
In the latest damming report, the constabulary has been heavily criticised after a man required hospital treatment following more than 20 hours in police cells.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) found “wholesale failings” in the way the force dealt with the 36-year-old from Bury St Edmunds.

India: ‘Low pay leads to corruption among cops’
According to research conducted on 523 police personnel, corruption and internal politics play a major role in spoiling the image of police among the masses. It also revealed that police personnel who are getting trained at the Gujarat Police Academy (GPA) at Karai, Gandhinagar, are paid very little. And this might be the root cause behind corruption.
The research was done by two students- Aniruddhsinh Vala and Indrajit Singh Rajpurohit -- of Gujarat University's Department of Psychology. They have recently completed their PG Diploma in Counseling Psychology and have taken up the project to know the psychological aspects of police personnel being trained at GPA.
The project was conducted on the request of joint director, GPA, VK Mall.
"The joint director wants to know the problems, both psychological and emotional, being faced by the trainees at the GPA," said Dr Ashwin Jansari, head, department of psychology. The prime reason for the training was to make them better policemen in the future. Respondents included 77 Armed PSI, 175 Un-armed PSI and 210 SRP Jawans.
When asked about their image among the masses, 211 out of 523 trainee policemen said the police have a bad name in public. Only 143 respondents felt the opposite. On being asked how to improve the image, half of the respondents said that eradication of corruption and better behaviour with the masses can help them get rid of this tainted impression.
The findings of the research also point out the problems faced by policemen during training. Fifty per cent of them believe that lack of proper food and too much work are the reasons behind the stress. Another finding revealed that 195 out of a total 523 respondents feel that policemen should be paid well in order to encourage them to perform well at work.
The research pointed out a few major shortcomings at the GPA. One of the suggestions was to give them training in advanced weapons and technology which at present is not provided. Another suggestion was to install more recreational equipment at the academy.
"We can say that low salary leads to corruption, which in turn leads to bad image of police among the masses. The research will help the policemen become better at performing their duties," said Aniruddhsinh who has already submitted his report to the faculty. It will be soon sent to the GPA.
