Paul C. Watkins, the Lynnwood deputy police chief who pleaded guilty last week to stealing money and property from the department's evidence room, was fired today, according to a news release from the department's chief.

Watkins, 50, who was with the department for more than 20 years, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to stealing money from the department, a federally funded local agency. Shelton cop fired for "serious violations"

A Shelton police officer who had been on paid administrative leave since being charged with fifth-degree larceny by State Police in 2008, has been fired.

The larceny charge against Loren Casertano stemmed from an incident in which a girl stole an iPod from Casertano's daughter at Shelton Intermediate School.

Casertano said he and his wife, Kim-Marie, who was also implicated in the incident, recently opted for accelerated rehabilitation in the case in order to save mounting attorney's fees. State Superior Court Judge Richard Arnold in Milford earlier this month granted AR, which is a special form of probation for first-time offenders.

Following the judge's ruling, Casertano and his union representative had a meeting with Police Chief Joel Hurliman concerning his job status and, Casertano said, he was fired on the spot.

"I think the chief's mind was made up because he had already cleaned out my locker," said Casertano. "It was something we had expected, innocent or not."

Hurliman said Casertano was terminated for several serious violations of the rules and regulations of the department, which are outlined in an internal affairs investigation conducted following the officer's arrest.

Hurliman would not go into what the violations were, only to say some of them were "multiple offenses."

The Police Ddepartment claimed Casertano tried to extort money from his daughter's friend after the iPod was taken, but Casertano has denied the allegation.

Casertano has said his arrest for larceny was in retaliation for his trying to expose corruption within the Police Department.

Hurliman said Casertano's claims of police corruption were made a month after his arrest and involved a matter he had sat on for two years.

"He could have brought it up at any time, but didn't until after his arrest," the chief said. "He claims he was exposing corruption, but he exposed himself as a corrupt officer."

Casertano has already filed a grievance of his firing, and Hurliman said Tuesday he has already denied the grievance. The next step would be for Casertano to file a grievance with the mayor, and if the mayor denied the grievance, it would go to the state Mediation and Arbitration Board.
