South Africa: SIU probes staggering corruption cases
The special investigating unit (SIU) has been inundated with new cases revealing staggering corruption in the police, the public broadcaster, the land reform and housing subsidy systems, state departments and municipalities, MPs heard on Wednesday.

Bribery and corruption charges

The Police Department is at the top of the list.

Mar 09, Colombo: The number of Sri Lankan government officers arrested in connection with charges of corruption or extortion of bribes has risen.

A report by the Commission to investigate allegations of bribery or corruption revealed that there has been a considerable increase in this regard in the past three years.

The Commission handed over a special report on cases of extortion of bribes in 2004 to President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently.

According to the report, 90 public employees were arrested on charges of extorting bribes in 2004.

The Police Department is at the top of the list. In addition, officers in the Sri Lanka Army, Wild Life, Labour and Cooperative Departments, the Ministry of Justice and the Samurdhi Authority were also arrested in the same year. The Commission says special attention will be focused on taking legal action against convicted parliamentarians and acclaimed figures.

Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has focused attention on reinvigorating the activities of the Commission investigating these charges.
