Policeman escapes charges afte
A senior policeman has escaped charges in Wagga Wagga, in southern New South Wales, after a lengthy investigation into allegations he perverted the course of justice.

The Police Integrity Commission (PIC) says another officer, Senior Constable Chris Jackson, is due to face court next week on charges relating to the Operation Whistler inquiry.

But the PIC says there will be no charges against Inspector Tom Murphy, who oversaw the crime scene after the arrest of Allan Hathaway in 2003.

The arrest left Mr Hathaway in hospital and resulted in a year-long inquiry in... Read more

Police face pressure to stop r

NSW police will come under renewed pressure to explain their failure to prevent the Cronulla riot revenge attacks after young men spoke out about their involvement.

Men of middle eastern descent attacked people and property in beachside Sydney suburbs in the days after mobs attacked people of similar appearance at Cronulla on December 11 last year.

Police did not stop a group of young men, who gathered in Punchbowl Park in south-western Sydney the evening after the riots, who drove in a convoy to the eastern suburbs to carry out revenge attacks.

Ali, one of the men involved in the attacks, told ABC television's Four Corners program he and his friends were willing to take their anger out on people who were not involved in the riot.

"We wanted to get it to the same people, like it's too hard still, you can't find them so, so we done it to other people," Ali said.

"So they hit our innocent people like, that went there, and so why not, (we) may as well do the same things."

Islamic community leaders told Four Corners that Punchbowl Park was a popular gathering place for young members of their community. Local police commander John Richardson admitted being unaware of this fact.

Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Goodwin said he did not know why police failed to stop a convoy of cars which left Punchbowl Park.

"Yes there (were) convoys of cars that got in and caused that damage," he told Four Corners.

"That is something that we're investigating."

Rumours a young woman had died after being assaulted during the Cronulla riot and that there was a plot to bomb Lakemba Mosque inflamed the passions of the revenge attackers.

Police have arrested 12 out of 20 Cronulla riot suspects whose pictures were published in newspapers last week.

But they said they were having difficulty tracking down those involved in the revenge attacks because of a reluctance by some in the middle eastern community to dob in people who were involved.
