MEERUT: Even as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chief has demanded a report from the police, the officials have ordered a probe into the circumstances in which scores of girls in a park were brutally beaten by the Meerut police on Monday afternoon.

Police And Corruption
According to a Police release, 218 officers have been charge sheeted for bribery, corruption and human rights violations. It has been noted that these offences have been increasing annually since 2002. Sequel to1244 investigations, legal actions have been filed against 218 officers -23 ASP’s, 6 OIC’s,19 Inspectors , 51 Sub-inspectors, 35 Police sergeants. Furthermore 98 Police constables and one Police driver have also been found guilty
In the light of these facts, the question arises as to how law and order can be established. If the custodians of Law and Order violate the country's laws in such manner, who can be entrusted with the task of ensuring a foul-free society, is the question.
It has been found that politicians are some times responsible for these police or public officials flouting the law. Only a handful of public servants refuse to succumb to such pressures from politicians. When public officials cave in to pressures of politicians, they sometimes fall victim.
This brings to light the importance of a code of ethics for politicians to make them real servants of the people. While it is laudable to bring to book the public officials indulging in bribery, corruption and human rights violation, it is equally imperative that investigations are made into the background of such illegal activities and culprits behind them are identified.
