VICTORIA'S corruption watchdog has condemned the state's police for failing to change their "go in hard" culture on the use of force, warning that urgent reform is required to ensure officers are better equipped to handle violent confrontations.

Shocking Mistakes Mar Probe in

There have been shocking mistakes in the investigation into the death of Anguel Dimitrov, dubbed Chorata, who was beaten to death during an arrest in November 2005.

The prosecutors of Sofia military regional prosecutor's office have wrongfully used the text of the Penal code that allows the usage of violence of police officers during an operation, the chair of the Military Appellative Court brigade general Vesselin Pangezov commented.

There is a great incompleteness and violation of the professional ethics during the arrest of Anguel Dimitrov, he added.

Dimitrov was detained during a nation-wide anti-crime operation early November, 2005 in the town of Blagoevgrad, Southwestern Bulgaria. He passed away shortly after the arrest. Media say that drugs were found near his car. His death was first pegged as a heart attack but expertise showed that he had passed away due to a blow to the head. Dimitrov was a close ally of the alleged mobster Vassil Gorchev, who was publicly shot dead earlier in January.

In January Sofia Military Appellate Court overruled as unlawful the ruling for the suspension of the investigation into the death of Dimitrov and ordered a new investigation into the case.
