Police Recruits Given Thorough
In an effort to recruit only the best officers, departments put prospective employees through a battery of tests and scenarios -- but sometimes bad officers are able to slip through the cracks.

FBI Special Agent Peter Galbraith said when a person applies to the FBI a lengthy process begins where agents actually go to the hospital where the person was born.

"I don't believe there is an agency that does a more complex background check than we do, but even with all that we have had our share of bad agents," he said.

Zambia: Police to Go Digital

PLANS to introduce the use of digital equipment in the fight against crime have reached an advanced stage, Zambia Police Service director of training, Dr Solomon Jere, has disclosed.

Dr Jere said the fight against crime required new approaches hence the initiative by the police command, headed by Inspector-General, Ephraim Mateyo, to digitalise the operation system.

Dr Jere, who was representing Mr Mateyo, was speaking on Saturday night during a Press dinner at the O'Hagen's Pub and Grill in Lusaka.

He said police had decided to take a scientific approach in fighting crime, taking into account that criminals were also becoming sophisticated.

He said digitalising police operations was another way that would help bring to book people who were in the habit of involving themselves in criminal activities adding that this new method of curbing crime should be taken as a warning.

Dr Jere called on the media to join hands in fighting crime and creating peace in Zambia and challenged the media to verify their information before publishing to avoid misleading the public.

Police would soon be conducting a Press tour to the three police training institutions to familiarise Press people with the training offered to officers.

Meanwhile, four more people who were recently recruited for police training have been found to be deformed following thorough medical examinations.

Dr Jere said the affected recruits have discontinued the training and maintained that the search for able-bodied trainees was an ongoing exercise as only qualified and healthy people joined the police.

He said the recruitment process would continue with stringent academic and physical examination according to the Zambia Police Act and police standing orders.

Dr Jere maintained that people with questionable school certificates would not be allowed to join the service.

The service has started retraining its officers ranking from sergeants to sub-inspectors in an effort to educate and improve on service delivery to the public.

He paid tribute to the Human Rights Intellectual Development Trust who had been offering training on human rights to police officers
