Federal oversight of LAPD exte

LOS ANGELES, CA, United States (UPI) -- A U.S. district judge has extended for another three years federal oversight of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Judge Gary Feess said the department has made great strides to prevent corruption and abuse since the Rampart scandal but that its work is not finished yet, the Los Angeles Daily News reported. The federal consent decree will remain in effect until June 15, 2009.

The LA police department agreed to the decree in 2001 after it was accused of widespread corruption and abuse. That came after a Rampart Division police officer convicted of stealing evidence implicated dozens of his co-workers, the newspaper reported.

The police department has complied with about 70 percent of the 152 provisions outlined in the 80-page consent decree, the newspaper said. Among those still to be implemented is a risk-management computer system designed to track complaints and root out problem officers.

'We`re fully committed to reforming the Los Angeles Police Department,' Assistant Chief George Gascon was quoted as saying.
