Giving the 2005 Dimberleby lecture, Sir Ian Blair, head of the Met Police (UK) said, "there is little dispassionate, thought-through, public examination of just what it is we are here to do in the 21st century - to fight crime or to fight its causes, to help build stronger communities or to undertake zero tolerance, nor of how these things should be done or what priority each should have or what we should stop doing." What do forum members think is the way forward? What should the police concentrate theri activities on? Colin |

Colin, I was initially impressed by Sir Ian Blair’s lecture but retrospectively I feel that his question 'what kind of police service do we want and who should decide?' has become irrelevant as the Home Office appear to have decided before his lecture had taken place and without much consultation with the public. It appears that reform is occurring at lightning speed and wonder if there is any other direct than a more centralist police service following more European traditions. It will certainly be interesting to see how policing in the UK will develop and if the current reforms are a stepping stone to a national police service. Steve

Steve I think you have raised an important issue regarding the traditional relationship between the Police, the local authority and the government. It appears that the governement have deceided to reform the structure of the service to a regional level without much consultation with the other two parties involved. This is leading to Police Authorities and some Forces challenging the process in the courts. The outcome of this will dictate if the relationship between the Governement, Police Authorities and Police will continue or if the Governement will have more control. One to watch

I think the police service needs to clarify its role. The changes we are seeing in the national and international level of policing appear to move away from the traditional community role, however within the communities themselves there is this requirement for more intergrated partnership working. I think the answer is quite simple policing is devided into specialist areas Drugs (Drug Squads) CID (Organised Crime) Community ( Local beat Officers) Whats the problem ? ------------- Kiplin |
