The present system of policing in England and Wales with 43 Police Forces due to change. However a large number of the Forces involved and their Police Authorities are making a challenge in the courts with regards to the proposed changes. What do other members think. Are changes in the span of control from the executive to the officers on the ground a good thing or a bad thing.

If a force is small then the executive have more chance of being in tune with the staff working for them and would have a bettre understanding of the reality at the front end. On the other side with larger forces there is a greater standardisation of roles and responsibility.

Would this proposed change lead to more or less ethical accountability ?

What are the views and  experience of other member?

I personally think that the smaller the span and control the more likely it is the leadership can influence ethical practice but only if the leadership demonstrates this through their decision making, statements and policies which develops an ethical ethos within. Leadership is key. The ethical or unethical practice of the leadership will have a direct influence in a small agency as opposed to a large one.
