USA: Officers Claim Retaliatio
Two of the principal whistle-blowers in a highly publicized investigation of the state police internal affairs unit are claiming that they are targets of retaliation for making complaints and that the attorney general's office is not adequately protecting them.

Women police cells in all dist

Shillong, June 29 (PTI): A women's police cell headed by a woman sub-inspector has been created in each district of Meghalaya to look into crimes against women, Home Minister R G Lyngdoh told the assembly on Wednesday.

Lyngdoh assured members he would examine a proposal to set up a special court to deal with crimes against women.

The police department is working in collaboration with the state commission for women and NGOs, Lyngdoh said. He was answering a question on crimes against women in Shillong over the last five years.

He said more and more women were coming forward to report crimes against them to the police.

Earlier, replying to a question from Manas Chauduri (independent), Lyngdoh said 143 cases of crime against women were registered in Shillong during 2001-05, and chargesheets were issued in case of 78.

This demonstrated that chargesheets had been issued in 85 per cent cases, implying that the police were effective in tackling crimes against women, he said.

Asked why there was only one case of conviction in the past five years, Lyngdoh said it was the duty of police to take cases to court which decided the conviction.
