AN eight-hour police interview with a Perth man jailed for 12 years for a murder he did not commit raises questions about potential misconduct, a corruption inquiry heard yesterday.

Western Australia’s Corruption and Crime Commission is investigating whether public officials engaged in misconduct during the police investigation into the murder of Pamela Lawrence in her Mosman Park jewellery store in May, 1994, and Andrew Mallard’s 1995 wrongful conviction for the crime.

It is also examining Mr Mallard’s subsequent appeals, including the High Court’s 2005 quashing of his c... Read more

Police boss suspended over his

One of New Zealand's top policemen was suspended because he allegedly acted inappropriately toward a woman.

Superintendent Steve Fitzgerald, manager of the national communications centre, was placed on special leave by police after a complaint by a staff member.

Police have not given any details of the reasons behind the complaint, but a source said it related to allegations of inappropriate behaviour toward a woman.

Mr Fitzgerald was placed on leave about two months ago. A police investigation took place before the matter went to mediation.

It is understood the first mediation session, involving Mr Fitzgerald, his lawyer and staff from the police commissioner's office, including human resources director Wayne Annan, took place in Wellington on Saturday.

A police spokesman would not confirm whether the session had taken place. "We've said that there will be mediation. There is no timeline on it. I don't know when it will be completed yet. We might have some better idea later (this) week."

Mr Fitzgerald has not commented publicly on the complaint and could not be reached for comment.

Superintendent Steve Christian is filling in as national communications centre manager while Mr Fitzgerald is on leave.

Mr Fitzgerald, formerly head of road policing, was appointed to the newly created job in June last year. His role was to implement many of the changes recommended in a damning review of the three call centres by an international panel of experts.

Police Minister Annette King has refused to comment on the matter, saying it is for police to deal with.
