Ottawa police to investigate O

ORILLIA — Ottawa police are taking over an investigation into the actions of provincial police officers at an aboriginal occupation in Caledonia, near Hamilton.

OPP Commissioner Gwen Boniface has asked the Ottawa service to probe how officers responded to an assault on two television camera operators on June 9.

The TV crew was filming the on-going occupation when one of the cameramen was swarmed, assaulted and had his equipment stolen.

The cameramen have claimed that provincial police officers who witnessed the assault did nothing to stop it.

Police have since charged two men with assault.

The incident took place in a parking lot near the Douglas Creek Estates, where aboriginals took over the land in February claiming it is rightfully theirs.
