Sex claim at police lab

A NEW sex harassment scandal has rocked NSW Police, with at least one officer in its forensic services group to be disciplined.

The Daily Telegraph has learned of an internal investigation into claims of misconduct dating back five years.

A female member of the group, the equivalent of the CSI, is believed to be on extended sick leave while all staff have undergone mandatory sex and gender-based education. A spokeswoman confirmed an officer would be disciplined, saying: "NSW Police is considering disciplinary action for officers as a result of the complaint."

At least one other forensic officer could also be involved in alleged harassment or discrimination. The claims did not involve physical contact.

The new controversy comes as Commissioner Ken Moroney battles to reassure the public he has brought scandals at the Goulburn training college under control.

More than 30 officers at Goulburn were found to have had sex with recruits since 2001. Nine have been removed from the college and top police fought for a year to stop The Daily Telegraph revealing the scandal.

Now Mr Moroney faces a new controversy just four days after ordering a review of the college's management.

News of the forced removals from the college has sparked concerns among some in the training facility that they are being used as scapegoats.

The NSW Police Association has attacked the decision as a "knee-jerk reaction to media hype".

A week ago Mr Moroney announced the appointment of Christine Ronalds SC to assist police reform "gender-based policy" and its codes of conduct. A report by a senior police officer two years ago lamented that police had not done enough to study sexual harassment and sexual discrimination.

A police spokeswoman has told The Daily Telegraph that the harassment investigation into the forensic services group is the only one to have occurred in the past five years.

She would not confirm reports one victim was on extended sick leave.

"The harassment does not involve physical contact," she said.

"Since the complaint all staff have undergone mandatory sex and gender-based education including the reinforcement of the police code of conduct."
