Johannesburg police are investigating charges of attempted murder and corruption against a member of the city's Organised Crime Unit. The police inspector was pursuing a suspect in Yeoville along with other police officers, when he allegedly opened fire and shot and injured the suspect and four bystanders.

The inspector has not yet been arrested, but has been charged with attempted murder. He is also suspected of corruption in relation to earlier incidents.

"At this stage there was an attempted murder case opened against the police officer. The case will be presented by the senior prosecutor whereby further decisions will be taken and we're looking at the seriousness of the incident," says Cheryl Engelbrecht, a police spokesperson.
