Interpol defends Selebi amid m

Interpol has come out in defence of Jackie Selebi, the national police commissioner. According to a report in a daily newspaper, the international crime-fighting organisation has issued a statement saying Selebi is a man of the highest professionalism and integrity.

This follows allegations of corruption and involvement in criminal activity against Selebi. Selebi insists he is a victim of an orchestrated smear campaign.

André Pruis, his deputy, has also denied involvement in any criminal activity. Pruis says they took serious exception about the fact that there is an indication about the national commissioner and the cop mafia. "For me, the ordinary citizen is reading that story, they will see only two names there, the national commissioner and I. For the ordinary citizen that could possibly be the ‘cop mafia’," Pruis added.

NPA refuses to comment
A 144-page document containing affidavits by witnesses and informers is reportedly part of a criminal investigation by the Scorpions. But the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has refused to confirm or deny this. The Independent Complaints Directorate, on the other hand, says it has decided not to pursue the matter due to lack of evidence.

Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus has written to President Thabo Mbeki asking him to appoint a judicial commission to investigate the allegations.
