Australia: Top cop in suicide

A HIGH-ranking police officer is in a coma in hospital after trying to commit suicide in a hotel room.

Superintendent Paul Nolan, who was recently suspended from the NSW Police Force because he is under investigation by the Police Integrity Commission, was found unconscious about midnight on Tuesday.

The nature of the PIC investigation is unclear.

It is the latest tragedy to rock the NSW Police Force, following the suicide of two other police officers this year.

Supt Nolan, described as highly regarded by colleagues, was found in a room at Noah's on the Beach hotel in Newcastle.

The 54-year-old father had overdosed on a mixture of alcohol and prescription pills.

It is believed that concerns had been raised for his safety and police called for ambulance officers.

A NSW Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed that ambulance officers attended a hotel room on Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle, following a report of self-harm. A man was taken to Mater Hospital in a serious condition after ingesting drugs and alcohol.

Supt Nolan's wife Belinda, who is also a police Superintendent, is believed to be distraught. Her husband had held the senior position of commander of Ku-Ring-Gai Local Area Command, based at Hornsby, before going on sick leave at least six months ago.

However, he was formally suspended in the past few weeks.

A PIC spokeswoman last night confirmed the investigation.

"As a result of enquiries conducted by the PIC, information relating to Mr Nolan was disseminated to NSW Police for its consideration and any further action it deemed appropriate," she said.

Police sources have cited the lengthy nature of PIC and internal investigations as contributing to emotional stress for officers.

A spokesman for Police Commissioner Ken Moroney confirmed in a statement that "a 54-year-old man is in a stable condition in a Newcastle hospital following an incident" and that police had attended a hotel following information about a "concern for welfare".

Tuesday night's incident comes after Mr Moroney last week expressed concerns about mental health issues among the force, publicly telling his officers that it was "OK to cry".

In January, 29-year-old Constable Greg Lundberg committed suicide with his pistol in Menai police station due to personal problems.

Last month a 39-year-old senior constable barricaded himself inside Earlwood police station and threatened to take his life.

Earlier this month, 27-year-old Constable Nathan Hearps from Quakers Hill plunged to his death from a Surry Hills apartment block.
