Brazil's police 'execute thous
Hundreds, possibly thousands of people are shot by police every year in Brazil, a BBC investigation has found.

The authorities say it is mainly criminals caught in military-style raids on drug gangs but according to a former senior official, new evidence suggests that many of the shootings are cold-blooded executions conducted by the police.

Police suspended over bashing

A POLICE officer has been suspended and another removed from operational duties, on recommendations from NSW's internal police watchdog.

The actions are in addition to both officers facing charges, accused of bashing a man while arresting him for traffic offences and then trying to cover up the attack.

The police department said a senior constable had been suspended and an inspector had been removed from operational duties as a result of a Police Integrity Commission investigation.

Police would not name the officers, but the PIC has previously named Senior Constable Chris Jackson and Inspector Tom Murphy, attached to Wagga Wagga Local Area Command, as being involved in the case of Allan Frederick Hathaway.

Mr Hathaway suffered a broken jaw, eye socket and arm when he was arrested at his Wagga Wagga home on February 6, 2003 after being seen driving an unregistered vehicle.

The PIC last week found Senior Constable Jackson caused Mr Hathaway's injuries and recommended he be charged with assault and two counts of giving false and misleading evidence to the commission.

The commission also recommended Insp Murphy be charged with perverting the course of justice, after he hired cleaners to remove blood spatter from the scene.
