Sallee resigns from police dep

Recently reinstated Wickenburg police officer Chris Sallee resigned from the Town of Wickenburg Police Department last week and is taking issue with his former superiors.

Sallee, who was terminated last year, was recently reinstated as a town employee when a Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of a special action brought by Sallee against the town.

Sallee was immediately reinstated and put on paid administrative leave.

In a lengthy resignation letter addressed to Police Chief Tony Melendez, Sallee states that he was resigning from the town because of an unexpected amount of mistreatment he had received from Melendez and other supervisors.

Sallee started off his resignation letter by providing a bit of personal and work history. He graduated from Wickenburg High School in 1991 and spent 13 years as a police officer and later a narcotics detective for the town.

“I always wanted to be a police officer, as my grandfather was for 35 years,” Salle said. “I have received several awards, great evaluations and the best yet, an opportunity to protect and serve the citizens of Wickenburg.”

He then went on to cite examples during the past 14 months of what he believes has been mistreatment toward him by Melendez and the Town of Wickenburg.

Sallee had been involved in a December 2005 off-duty vehicle accident, where he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). He received disciplinary action and returned to work for five months. The DUI charges were dismissed by a Maricopa County Superior Court judge after the special prosecutor handling the case asked the judge to dismiss the charges.

Sallee says that soon after the charges were dropped, Melendez began an investigation into a 2004 traffic stop just outside of Yarnell. Melendez believed that Sallee was not truthful during the investigation and Sallee was terminated.

After he was terminated, Sallee requested a hearing with the town’s personnel board in an attempt to have his termination overturned. However, neither the board or the Wickenburg Town Council voted in his favor.

Sallee has had an ongoing issue with the tape recording of the hearing, which was also a problematic issue cited by the Superior Court judge who ruled to reinstate Sallee.

The tape was missing more than an hour of testimony, and the order in which the witnesses testified on the tape was not the order they actually testified. Sallee believes the tape was edited and altered. At the time of the incident, the town said the tape recorder had malfunctioned.

Sallee cited other examples of what he believes is mistreatment, such as the town refiling the DUI charges just days after he filed a special action against the town. He also says the Wickenburg Police Department (WPD) attempted to have his name placed on an integrity list with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for not being truthful.

He also said in his letter that since being reinstated, he had received several letters from the town indicating that he needed to contact Melendez with his phone number and address.

Sallee says in his letter that he left a voice message with Melendez and that Melendez has since denied receiving the message, recommending disciplinary action.

Sallee says all these events are interesting and odd.

“I never wanted to be terminated, I never wanted to have my integrity challenged, and I have been truthful for the past 13 years,” Sallee said. He said he loved being a police officer and enjoyed working with his fellow officers in trying to make the area a better place for everyone. He said he will always remember the better times.

“I had some good moments, to include working with narcotic canine Taylor,” Sallee said. “I have removed an unprecedented amount of narcotics from this town and these memories will always be with me.”

The Town of Wickenburg declined comment on Sallee’s resignation or his letter.
