Police to review interview ban
Police may review a controversial ban on journalists interviewing criminal suspects after a senior media figure said yesterday it could lead to basic rights violations as a result of fewer channels being afforded to the suspects to defend themselves. Royal Thai Police spokesman Lt-Gen Achirawit Suphanphesat promised to reconsider the ban in talks with the national police chief after listening to comments from Matichon executive director Pongsak Phayakvichien.

Police chief suspended for mis

TREMONT CITY — Chief of Police Jim O'Neill has been suspended pending a hearing regarding misconduct, village officials announced Monday.

Details of the misconduct are not being made public until the hearing, said village council member Tony Flood. The hearing was initially scheduled for Monday but was moved to Nov. 5 at the request of O'Neill's attorney, Flood added.

Captain Doug Cogar has been named acting chief while O'Neill is on paid administrative leave.

About 15 village residents showed up to Monday's council meeting, with many airing concerns about the number of police now on duty in the village without O'Neill.

"We have the best coverage we can, given the funds available," said council member Jayne Athey.

With a population of about 400 people, the village now has five part-time officers, although one is currently away at National Guard training, said Mayor Jeff Clippinger.

In other business, the council officially accepted the resignation of President Larry Blevins due to health reasons, said Flood.

Former councilman Mark Hunger was unanimously approved to fill Blevins' unexpired two-year term.

Flood, named acting president after Blevins' resignation, was voted to permanently take the position.
