Durham officers face misconduc
Several Durham Police officers are on temporary leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation that could turn into a criminal investigation.
There are allegations linked to prostitution, but city leaders are refusing to comment on the matter.
Police Chief Jose Lopez won't say how many officers are involved, but he's promising to get to the bottom of it. "This is a reality, I don't have time for disappointment, I have to take action and that's what I'm doing," he said.
Durham's new police chief is dealing with the embarrassment of several officers on leave, accused of sexual misconduct. City Manager Patrick Baker says, "On occasion you're going to have some bad apples and it's important to get rid of them not just for the public's perspective but also for our men and women in law enforcement."
City leaders won't confirm whether the allegations involve prostitutes and possible criminal charges and as for how the department found out it had a problem no comment. "Not at this point without giving up portions of the investigation," Lopez said.
Lopez says the investigation started weeks ago. It was the topic of a closed door session with Durham City Council members. Councilman Eugene Brown says he's happy with the way the department is addressing the issue. "I'm very pleased that we're moving... addressing this issue in a forthright manner which is the way it should be addressed," Brown said.
The investigation is making progress. A few officers have already been cleared of any wrongdoing according to Lopez. "And from that few we're finding out that some of them don't have any problems and we are dwindling down to the ones that do," he said.
Chief Lopez says he also wants to assure residents they have a professional police department that is policing itself.
The allegations arise as the department faces scrutiny over its handling of the Duke lacrosse case, in which three lacrosse players were falsely accused of raping a stripper.
The city and several police officials are among those named in a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by the former players.
