South Africa: Police chief in

South Africa's police commissioner Jackie Selebi sought Thursday to prevent prosecutors from bringing charges following an inquiry into his alleged underworld links, a radio station reported.

A spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority confirmed it had been served with papers by Selebi, while officials at Pretoria high court said that an application from him would be heard on Friday.

Talk Radio 702, quoting a copy of the application, said Selebi -- who is also president of Interpol, the international police liaison agency -- was seeking "an interdict preventing the Scorpions from executing any warrant for his arrest or taking any steps to obtain a warrant for his arrest".

The Scorpions are a special unit of the NPA that investigates and prosecutes serious cases of organized crime and corruption.

In addition, the application demands that the NPA make available "full details of allegations" against Selebi.

Selebi, 57, has been the subject of a lengthy NPA investigation centering on his acknowledged friendship with businessman Glenn Agliotti, who has been charged with the September 2005 murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble.

A warrant was issued for the police commissioner's arrest last year, only to be cancelled when the director of public prosecutions was suspended.

That development led to a review by the NPA into its inquiry against Selebi, which has now been completed. A decision on whether charges will be brought is expected before the end of the month.

NPA spokesman Tlali Tlali told AFP that the authority "intends to oppose this application vigorously in court" on Friday.

Selebi's spokeswoman, Sally de Beer, said the police commissioner was acting in his "personal capacity". She declined to make further comment.

A spokesman at Pretoria high court confirmed that the application would be heard on Friday.

Gerrie Nel, the senior member of the Scorpions unit that led the investigation into Selebi, was himself arrested Tuesday on corruption charges.

Nel, the head of the Scorpions in Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria, is alleged to have meddled in a probe being conducted against one of his officers.

He was released on bail Wednesday, as the NPA issued a statement expressing shock at his arrest.

Nel also spearheaded the Scorpions' investigation into the September 2005 murder of mining magnate Kebble in Johannesburg that led to Agliotti's arrest.
