Oakboro police officer suspend

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating one of Oakboro Police Department’s part-time police officers, according to information released Tuesday.

“The investigation is still pending with SBI, and we’re really not sure how long it will continue,” said Lt. George Burris, a full-time officer with Oakboro Police Department.

Since the investigation is ongoing, details surrounding it could not be disclosed, but SBI began investigating Officer Mitch Black on July 19 following a request by Oakboro Police Chief Joe Lowder and Prosecutorial District 20A District Attorney Michael Parker.

Black was then suspended without pay as his officer misconduct allegations are investigated.

“There’s still people being investigated and reports are being made up (completed). We can’t talk about it,” Burris said.

“It hurts but we’ve got to go by protocol and the chief is doing what he thinks is best.”

Black is one of 12 officers with the department, five of which are full-time and seven are part-time.

With 11 other officers available to the town, Burris assured the residents of Oakboro can feel safe and protected.
