Police Officer investigated fo

A Medical Lake police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while under investigation on claims of sexual misconduct while on duty.

Medical Lake Police Sergeant Joseph Mehrens has been under investigation by the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, which has forwarded the results of its investigation to prosecutors in Medical Lake.

Deputies are recommending Mehrens be charged with misdemeanor assault.

Documents say Mehrens repeatedly touched the victims breasts on one occasion and grabbed and manipulated the front of her jacket another time.

The victim in the case is a city employee who has a temporary protection order against Mehrens, who can't come within two blocks of her home or workplace. The protection order says the woman fears for her life because Mehrens has weapons.

The victim wrote in court documents she was told by a detective that Mehrens has established a continued pattern of similar behavior and has a history of stalking since 1996.

However a check of court records showed there are no charges against Mehrens for stalking.

The City of Medical Lake is not commenting on the matter while the city's police chief said he will issue a statement on the matter Friday.
