WA police question lone patrol

The WA Police Union has questioned the use of single officer patrols after a Victorian man was shot dead by an officer in the Pilbara yesterday, saying a less experienced officer might have been killed.

The union says it had been assured only last month that single officer patrols had been phased out.

WA's Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan denies staff shortages are to blame.

"Look we've got an agreement with the Police Union and one that I support, that officers in regional WA who are travelling 10 kilometres from their main centre do not have to go on patrol on their own," he said.

"They take officers with them normally. If they do, then it's a decision that they make individually."

Thirty-eight-year-old William John Watkins was stopped by a lone police officer near Karratha because he was suspected of stealing petrol from a roadhouse.

Mr Watkins was shot dead during a fight with the officer.

The officer, who was assaulted during the fight, is recovering in a Perth hospital.

Commissioner O'Callaghan has visited the sergeant in hospital.

Police say Mr Watkins was also wanted for questioning by Victorian police over the stabbing deaths of 21-year-old Laura Irwin and 23-year-old Colleen Irwin at the weekend.

He is believed to have an extensive criminal record of burglaries, rapes, assaults on police and drug offences.
