Philippines: PNP must be ethic
MANILA, Philippines--The entire police force has been told to practice good manners, be ethical at all times and "set an example" to the entire community to promote peace, an official said on Monday.
Chairman Ricardo Saludo of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) cited two cases of "bad manners" that police should refrain from doing: violation of human rights and the inability to protect the country's democracy.
Saludo, speaking during the 15th Philippine National Police (PNP) Ethics Day celebration at Camp Crame, told police to intensify their campaign for human rights protection.
"Kung mismo kayo ang lumalabag sa tamang asal, mawawalan na ng pag-asa ang mga tao (if you yourselves violate the the norms of right conduct, people will lose hope)," he added.
Saludo also lauded the continued cooperation between the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the PNP.
He also called on police to be upright, especially when practicing democracy. Saludo particularly cited the incident in Bangkok, Thailand where protesters seized airports there last November and police were unable to control the incident.
Saludo also called on police to respond to the "challenges of democracy," particularly political violence and extrajudicial killings.
