Officer pleads not guilty
A Milwaukee police officer has been charged with two counts of battery of members of a north side church in December after officers chased a suspect inside during Sunday night services. Church elders burst into applause after Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm announced the charges against Shawn Humitz, 26, who was suspended this week. He is charged with kicking two church members and striking one of them with his nightstick.

"Thank God for the charges," Willie Lewis, pastor of the Family Worship Center Pentecostal Church of Holiness, said in the courthouse hallway. <... Read more

Officers under fire after Duss

Three officers from the Sherbrooke Police have been summoned to appear before the Police Ethics Committee of Quebec for their conduct in the March 2008 arrest of prominent criminal-lawyer Michel Dussault.

The commissioner of Police Ethics in Quebec, Claude Simard, cited the three agents to come and explain their behavior in the arrest. Officer Jean-Pierre Rivard is accused of proceeding with the arrest and detention of Dussault without a valid reason. The two other agents, Jasmin Bernier and Alexandre Faucher, who handcuffed the lawyer in front of his clients and members of his staff, are accused of abusing their power.
Two other police officers involved in the arrest, Benoit Rainville and Patrick Cordeau, were not summoned at all.
In the afternoon of March 5th, 2008, Dussault was stopped by police in front of his office on his return from a business luncheon under the suspicion of driving under the influence. The police reportedly received an anonymous call informing them of Dussault’s possible intoxication. The lawyer was promptly searched, handcuffed and brought to the police station where he was administered a Breathalyzer test. The test showed a blood-alcohol content of .027, well below the legal limit of 0.8.
Instead of letting him go, Dussault was held for an additional 15 minutes as the arresting officers attempted to get permission to administer the Breathalyzer test a second time. The police officer responsible refused another test because of the low reading that the first one showed.
A year later, as reported in The Record in March of 2009, Dussault sued the city of Sherbrooke for $80,000 in damages incurred during the false arrest. He is asking for $40,000 for the damage to his integrity, his rights and dignity, $30,000 for personal harm and another $10,000 for moral and psychological harm and humiliation. That trial is scheduled to begin early next year.
Michel Dussault is best known as the criminal lawyer who has represented a number of Hell’s Angels members over the years. He is currently the legal representation for Sylvain Boulanger, the retired former-member of the Hell’s Angels who will be serving as a witness in the upcoming trials against the gang.
At the time of the March 5th, 2008 arrest, Dussault’s lawyer André Monette suspected that his client’s involvement with the biker-gang and other prominent accused was part of the reason for the Sherbrooke police’s mistreatment and over-zealous conduct toward Dussault.
Sherbrooke Police Chief Gaétan Labbé will wait for the Police Ethics Committee decision before making a statement regarding the three police officers.
