I am a Police sergeant in the UK currently studying for a PhD.  I am examining the experiences perceptions of dyslexic police officers who are engaged in front line policing duties.

I am exploring; policy, procedures, legislative, moral and ethical issues.  If anyone is interested in my research, has any comments, observations or knowledge I would welcome any contacts via this forum.

Andy

Andy,

I am quite interested in your research. I do not know of any instances in West Texas when this topic has come up, but I will make inquiries.

While it is obvious that a person with dyslexia might have trouble with vehicle license plates, identification numbers, etc. I wonder if there are less obvious elements that aren't readily apparent. Perhaps, since you are researching the topic, you could help us all by defining the effects of the disorder and the major concerns for our profession. I think that would be very helpful in furthering the discussion.

Thank you!

Chris

Hi Andy

I think your topic is very unusual but very relevant I will bring it to the attention of a few people and see what I can find for you.

Hi Andy,

More of an observattion but I have always been surprised that dyslexia is not recognised during the assessment centre when applicants apply to join the police service. Is this still the case?

Regards, Steve

Andy I have a contact at Durham University Queens College Stockton who deals with students with disabilities and they have a contact with specialists at Durham University in this area. I have spoken to her and if you contact her she will try and help to put you in touch with people who deal with this area. The contact details are

j.a.barker@durham.ac.uk

just say you are a member of ethicsinpolicing and explain what you are doing and what help you are looking for.

Andy,

Please contact Sgt. Ray Leible of the Midland Police Department, Midland, Texas at rleible@mail.ci.midland.tx.us

He has considerable contacts through another network and has agreed to post the question on that network. Just let him know what aspects you are interested in finding more information about....so that when he posts the inquiry you are more likely to get useful information.

Thanks
